Steve Wariner

Induction Year: 2022

Birth Name: Steven Noel Wariner

Birth Date: 12-25-1954

Place of Birth: Noblesville, Indiana

Steve Wariner was born in Noblesville, IN. While performing in a local club, he was discovered by Dottie West, who convinced the 17-year-old to join her band.

Years later, he met his idol, Chet Atkins, who hired Steve as a bass player and eventually signed him to his first recording contract at RCA Records. This launched his career as a songwriter/artist.

Steve’s credits as a songwriter include his own recordings of “You Can Dream Of Me,” “Baby I’m Yours,” “Precious Thing,” “I Got Dreams,” “Where Did I Go Wrong,” “Two Teardrops” and “Holes In The Floor Of Heaven,” which was named 1998 CMA Song and Single of the Year and the 1998 ACM Song of the Year. Steve also has written hits for other artists, including “Nothin’ But The Taillights” by Clint Black, “Where The Blacktop Ends” by Keith Urban and “Longneck Bottle,” a duet that he recorded with Garth Brooks.

Steve was inducted into the cast of the Grand Ole Opry in 1996. In 2009 — the year he was inducted into the National Thumbpickers Hall of Fame — Steve released an album titled Steve Wariner C.G.P. My Tribute to Chet Atkins, for which he wrote the majority of the songs. Steve was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2019.
